(b. 1992, Toronto, Canada) subtly brings her relationship to the past into her paintings. Rather than approaching memory through nostalgia, she recognises origin and autobiography as useful tools for investigation. Schwartz’s protagonists are considered ‘fractals’ of herself – merged with various imagery sourced from art history, pop culture, literature, cartoons and family photographs. Her process is as subtractive as it is additive, with previous layers being peeled, erased or washed away to reveal earlier decisions. She rarely uses brushes; instead preferring her gloved fingers, rags, and knives. The resulting canvases retain the traces of their own making and remain in a continual state of evolution.
