Lydia often refers to this figure as 'scaffolding' – an immovable presence that is alternately absorbed into, or emerges from, the surrounding swathes of colour. For Lydia, painting is fertile ground for renegotiating possibility and restraint, where the self is never fixed but remains in a constant state of becoming.
